Oculus has unveiled its newest and most affordable headset device, called Oculus Go, in an attempt to kickstart sales of its VR hardware. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, whose company owns Oculus VR, said it was his aim to one day get a billion people using VR. Set to ship in early 2018, the standalone Oculus Go starts at $199. The world's first AI computer designed to drive fully autonomous robotaxis was unveiled by NVIDIA yesterday. At the Our Ocean conference in Malta, Sky announced it will remove all single-use plastics from its products, supply-chain and operations by 2020. This change will be put in place immediately and by the end of 2017 all products will be made without plastic that is thrown away after one use. £25 million will be invested to help develop technology to stop use of single-use plastic in an Ocean Rescue Innovation Fund. An Australian report has suggested that users of autonomous cars should be exempt from drink-driving laws. The change has been recommended by the National Transport Commission (NTC) who has compared using an autonomous car to getting into a taxi. With many countries considering updating laws to prepare for an autonomous future, the report also questions whether current laws add further barriers to entry for autonomous vehicles. Samsung has unveiled its new Odyssey VR headset for Microsoft's new Mixed Reality platform. In a growing market, the headsets differentiating factor is that is does not require additional external sensors to track the user's movements. The brand has built on its more basic Gear VR, which to date has sold more than eight million units, (VR Scout) with an improved display of 90 frames-per-second and field view of 110-degrees, in the new Odyssey headset. A new major research centre for the development of ultra-low emission vehicles has received £10m investment from the West of England Combined Authority. Construction of the £60 million facility at the Bristol and Bath Science Park is scheduled to open in early 2020, with construction expected to start next summer. The Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) facility will stimulate over £67m in additional automotive research investment by 2025, as well as a turnover of £800m for the UK automotive sector...

Sir James Dyson is investing £2bn (according to The Economist) into electric vehicles and solid state battery development. Although known to most for his inventive vacuum cleaner products, Dyson appeared on Blue Peter in 1993 to show the Dyson teams prototype cyclonic filter that could be fitted on a vehicle’s exhaust system to trap particles.
