Tweets that contain fewer than 100 characters receive a 17% higher engagement rate than those with between 100 and 140, a report by Buddy Media published by Marketing Week has revealed.

The report, Strategies for Effective Tweeting showed that that the over use of hashtags is a recurring theme that people are put off by so many businesses are neglecting to include links in their tweets to maximise interaction.

By simply asking for a ‘RT’ (retweet) you increase your ‘RT’s by 12%, with less that 1% of businesses implementing this strategy it was found.

These results come after 320 twitter ‘handles’ for the highest profile brands were analysed, it was found that there was a 86% higher retweet rate for those who included links compared to those who didn’t. Those with links proceeded to not only improve click through rates but also to help multiply the brands messages and campaigns to the wider public.

The report stated: “As with any social network, it is not enough to simply publish content and hope for the best. Instead you need to know when to tweet, what to tweet and how often to tweet.”
