AOL has confirmed that on December 15th, its instant messaging service AIM will be officially closing.

Starting in 1997, the service “…tapped into new digital technologies and ignited a cultural shift, but the way in which we communicate with each other has profoundly changed,” said Michael Albers, vice president of communications product at Oath. They cut off access from third party AIM users earlier this year, in March, and have said there is not a replacement in the works.

It’s a sad day for some of us old timers who grew up with Instant Messenger. But it’s actually surprising it lasted this long against competition from many other better instant chat services such as Whatsapp.
