Nearly a third (29%) of adults in the US now own an iPad, tablet or e-reader. This is a climb of 2% on the previous three years, according to a report published by Mary Meeker, a Wall Street internet analyst.
This gives a clear indication of just how far mobile technology has advanced within the last five years.

To give you an idea of the scale and increasing power of mobile devises, in 2008 less than 1% of global traffic was accessed via mobile, but in 2010 this figure had jumped up to just over 4% with the most staggering jump being announced last week; mobile internet use accounts for 10% of all global traffic.

Growth potential is significant too – there were 953m active smart phone users in 2011. Globally there are 6.1bn mobile phones, the majority of which will be upgraded within the next five years. Last month in India, mobile internet over took desktop use.

In 2002 global landline usage was surpassed by mobile phones, and after 244 years of production of the most renowned reference book, the Encyclopaedia Britannica published its last edition.
