The completion of the buyout deal of $1.2bn by Microsoft of Yammer, the enterprise social network (ESN), is a clear indication of where the tech worlds believes that business-orientated social networks are headed.

Yammer has a steadily growing database of 5m with 80% of Fortune 500 businesses currently using the site. In general it is seen as a more social version of LinkedIn, but it allows you to interact with other members in group projects and instantly edit others work.

But this isn’t the only ESN out there, there are others. Chatter which is similar to Yammer; LinkedIn which is the most well-known business network; Jive which predates Yammer with far more users; and finally Ecademy which is orientated about contact making.
